The HL-V59W is an all-in-one camera recorder featuring a digital architecture for the camera head. It employs newly developed ASICs to deliver improved image quality, while providing enhanced reliability with substantially fewer parts. The VTR section is BetacamSP in format. The camera incorporates a high-performance 520,000- pixel FIT CCD image sensor.
The HL-V59W achieves outstanding image quality with more than 900 TV lines of horizontal resolution. The HL-V59W employs CCDs with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Switching between 16:9 and 4:3 modes can be done with a snap. HYPER GAIN capability is now more powerful up to +42dB of gain can be attained. This goes a long way toward shooting under poorly illuminated conditions delivering a high sensitivity of f8.0 at 2000 lx. The Personal Function Switch located on the front of the camera permits the user to toggle ONIOFF several functions.
The settable functions are: SHUTTER, SKIN DTL, SOFT DTL, BLACK PRESS/STRETCH, SUPER V.
A SmartMedia slot is located on the lower right-hand side of the camera body. Various camera settings can be stored on SmartMedia cards to facilitate more flexible camera operation or duplication of settings on multiple camera shoots.

Skin DTL permits only skin tone to be controlled by a DTL correction level. AHD (Auto HUE Detect) allows for one-touch matching of hues to which DTL is applied.
VF DTL can add DTL edges only to the image on the viewfinder. Because the contour of the image is enhanced be when focused, focusing is simplified.
Three rotary encoders are provided for adjustment
For MONITOR OUT, character information is superimposed.
Anton Bauer's digital battery and Automatique (ultralight REC ON/OFF) are supported.
Two-stage zebra patterns are supported.
When the VF CHAR button is pressed, the camera status is displayed on the viewfinder. This does not affect the output.

Playback signal can be provided, using a playback adapter.
